Kate Sutton is all arms and legs. She possesses none of her sister Alicia's honey-eyed beauty, but is intelligent and willful like her grandfather. It is an injustice, then, when Kate is falsely accused of Alicia's wrongdoing and is banished to remote Elvenwood Hall. But the world Kate encounters in Derbyshire, England is so strange and otherworldly that she has little time for regret. Elvenwood Hall has another, secret name-the Perilous Gard-and a mysterious history to go with it. It isn't long before Kate has a hundred questions about her new home. Who are the Fairy Folk? What is Master John's dark intent? And who is the Lady in the Green? Soon, she is deep in a terrifying adventure and a daring attempt to rescue Christopher Heron from strange and unimaginable forces.

Set in Elizabethan England, this story manages to be true to the period yet satisfyingly modern in its central character, Kate Sutton. The mystery reaches to the heart of the feminine psyche: a quest to save the life of a child thought dead and to redeem the love of a young man who considers himself responsible. Jill Tanner's voice has all the dramatic presence needed for this panoramic tale, and the stately pace of her reading allows the story to unfold by degrees. Plot alone would make this a compelling read-aloud, but Tanner's ability to subtly shift her voice accentuates the balance among the cast of finely drawn characters. Her skillful pacing weaves philosophy and plot into a seamless whole, making this Newbery Honor book an outstanding audio choice on many levels. K.T.B.
