Sixteen-year-old sharpshooter Amani Al'Hiza never doubted she'd escape the miserable one-horse desert town where she was born. Getting out had always been the plan. But she never figured she'd wind up running for her life-with a boy wanted for treason. When Amani enters a disastrous shooting contest against Jin, a rakish foreigner, she has no idea of his connection to the ongoing war between the ruthless Sultan of Miraji and his exiled son, the Rebel Prince. But soon the pair are fleeing across a desert crawling with vicious bandits, terrifying ghuls, and powerful djinni, and the Sultan's army is getting closer every day. When Amani and Jin stumble across the ruins of a town destroyed by an unearthly fire, it's clear the war's stakes are higher than either of them realized. The Rebel Prince has a secret weapon, and now he wants Amani to join his revolution. All Amani ever wanted was to escape the desert and find adventure-but will the desert let her go?

Still mourning the hanging of her mother for killing her father, 16-year-old Amani Al’Hiza seeks to escape the quiet, oppressive town of Dustwalk before her uncle takes her as one of his brides. With unusual blue eyes, sharpshooter skills, and no shortage of daring, Amani joins up with Jin, a lawless adventurer. Disguised as a boy, Amani travels with Jin across the desert and the Sand Seas, defending herself against “Nightmares,” “Skinwalkers,” and the pursuit of the Sultan of Miraji’s army and allies. Debut author Hamilton combines elements of Western and Middle Eastern civilization and lore with her own mythology, crafting an enticing, full-bodied story. Upon meeting the Rebel Prince, one of the sultan’s sons who promises leadership founded on equality and justice, Amani discovers her true identity and must choose between striking out on her own or defending the prince and his followers against a dangerous weapon. Through some of the metaphors can feel forced (“The rails were as empty as a drunk’s liquor bottle on prayer day”), Hamilton successfully mingles romance with thrilling stakes, and hints at a welcome sequel. Ages 12–up. Agent: Molly Ker Hawn, Bent Agency.

Narrator Soneela Nankani blends sass, longing, grit, and tenderness to make Amani and her fantastical world believable. In a story that meshes the Wild West and the Arabian Nights, Nankani's voice conveys the strength of a young woman who is bold enough to disguise herself as a boy and best her countrymen with sharpshooting skills. Nankani expresses Amani's wit as she plots to escape her desert town, a lecherous uncle, and memories of her executed mother who raised her on stories of djinn and mythical beasts. Nankani also describes the charms of the dangerous stranger and the magnetic connection that leads Amani to a hidden place where she discovers her true power. Nankani shifts easily as she presents adventure, rebel confrontations, humor, romance, and a huge cast of realistic and magical characters. S.W.
