In the winning third book of the Daughters of the Mayflower multiauthor series, Griep (The Captive Heart) tells the story of unlikely love on a dangerous expedition. In 1759, Mercy Lytton, who was raised in the Mohawk tribe, is working as a scout for the British army in the French and Indian War. When General Bragg sends Mercy on a mission to transport gold back to British territory, Mercy must marry in order to provide legal evidence backing up her cover story of a family traveling by wagon. Making matters worse, Elias Dubois, her new husband, is a condemned traitor who had been sentenced to hang. Elias agrees to save himself by becoming a double agent, and the two reluctantly marry. Despite Mercy’s hatred for Elias, she is also captivated by him. During the dangerous trip through territory controlled by hostile Natives and the French, Elias takes great care of Mercy, but she still cannot shake the feeling that he is hiding something. As they travel, keeping out of sight of the Wyandot, Mercy and Elias develop feelings for each other, and after Mercy is captured by the Wyandot, Elias risks his life to save her. When Mercy’s life is in the balance, she relies on her growing faith (inspired through her relationship with Elias after years away from Christianity) to see her through. Griep delivers a sweet, action-filled romance that will please fans of the series.
