Fifty-six years ago, two college friends named Bill Hewlett and David Packard decided to start a company out of a one-car garage. Today, that company-Hewlett-Packard-is universally acclaimed as the world's most admired technology corporation. Hewlett-Packard produces thousands of innovative products for customers around the globe and boasts nearly $24 billion in sales. Now, Bill Hewlett and David Packard's wildly successful approach to business is immortalized in The HP Way. Any manager or supervisor will be fascinated by their story and by the ways they used openness to change, unrelenting determination to win, and the virtue of sustained hard work to succeed.

The history of the the Hewlett Packard company will attract HP devotees, but Bookspan's formality and Packard's pomposity will not win new listeners. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This low-key account of the life and times of Hewlett Packard is written more like a yearbook covering five-plus decades of school life, rather than the history of a major corporation. Packard seems determined to acknowledge countless employees, suppliers and other contacts, justifying their presence through numerous vignettes that end as abruptly as a dead-end street. Although interesting as presented, the sketches are broad-brushed strokes, leaving readers wanting so much more. Nelson Runger's narration is slow, deliberate, clear and crisp but leaves listeners feeling that he expected more, too. T.J.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
