The classic Evil Under the Sun, one of the most famous of Agatha Christie's Poirot investigations, has the fastidious sleuth on the trail of the killer of a sun-bronzed beauty whose death brings some rather shocking secrets into the light.

The beautiful bronzed body of Arlena Stuart lay face down on the beach. But strangely, there was no sun and Arlena was not sunbathing...she had been strangled.

Ever since Arlena's arrival the air had been thick with sexual tension. Each of the guests had a motive to kill her, including Arlena's new husband. But Hercule Poirot suspects that this apparent "crime of passion" conceals something much more evil.

To the other guests at the Jolly Roger, the beautiful actress Arlena Marshall is the embodiment of evil, using her power to control others, seduce men, and destroy families. When her strangled body is found on the beach, Hercule Poirot, played by John Moffatt, finds a case with too many suspects. The cast includes Fiona Fullerton as Arlena, Robin Ellis as her husband, and Lindsey Fawcett as Linda, the sullen 16-year-old step-daughter with a penchant for voodoo. Moffatt's performance as the eccentric Belgian is good but lacks the energy and flamboyant flair of David Suchet's or Peter Ustinov's performances. S.E.S. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine

Did the actress found strangled on the beach deserve to die? Some of the guests at the resort where Hercule Poirot is relaxing say she did, but the Belgian detective thinks otherwise. He takes on the labor of finding her killer--and proving the value of her life. The moral judgments of the guests at Smugglers' Cove give this mystery a dimension beyond the whodunit, making for one of Agatha Christie's best novels. David Timson captures the mood of gossip in the face of tragedy excellently. The abridgment is well done despite the tight three-hour cap, giving the clues fair play without giving them away. Justice--and Christie fans--are well served. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine

Poirot attempts to get away from it all at the seaside, where he encounters Christie's usual international cast of characters. Since many of these eccentrics are stereotypes, David Suchet's wonderful rendering of the henpecked husband dutifully uttering "yes, darling"; the machine-gun verbal delivery of Westin; and the always volatile mix of English and Irish accents and temperaments all combine to surpass a straight reading. These delicious ingredients mix successfully with the complex story of the beautiful Arlena's murder and the many suspects who all possess motive, means, and opportunity, as Poirot cleverly reveals. Fiction EVIL UNDER THE SUN: A Hercule Poirot Mystery Agatha Christie, read by David Suchet. AudioEditions, unabridged, six CDs, 6.5 hrs., $39.95 ISBN 1-57270-248-6 Considered by many to be one of the very best Agatha Christie mysteries, this macabre tale has lost none of its crisp intrigue since it was first published in 1940. Using a plot formula that has since become a mystery standard, Christie conveniently gathers all the characters in one hard-to-leave location, in this case, the Jolly Roger, a vacation hotel on the southern coast of England. One of the guests, a gorgeous, dramatic flirt, is strangled to death, and the famous detective Hercule Poirot—who happens to be vacationing at the Jolly Roger, too—sets out to solve the case. Each of the well-developed characters is suspect, and listeners will constantly be changing their bets as to whodunit. British stage actor Suchet, who many know as the definitive Poirot from the Public Television Mystery!
series was an obvious choice for the reader of this production, having won an Audie award for reading Christie's Mysterious Affair at Styles
in 1997. Suchet gives an outstanding and highly entertaining performance, obviously taking great zeal in the task of fleshing out Christie's colorful lot of characters.
