Laura Linney transports the listener into the thick of the action as Nancy Drew undertakes to help out her dear friends and rescue her father. In this early Keene mystery set in the environs of an old stone mansion, Nancy is frustrated at almost every turn, but, still, she is always proper, always ready to fix a meal, rarely discouraged, and always ready to set off in pursuit. For longtime Drew fans, the mystery unfolds with satisfying regularity. For new listeners, Linney brings an immediacy and a freshness that keep the listener at Nancy's side as she solves another mystery. A.R. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine

Gr 3-6-Nancy Drew is on the case, trying to solve the second mystery of her career. When Nancy's friend Helen asks her to come stay at Twin Elms to try and catch the ghost that has been frightening Helen's Aunt Rosemary and Miss Flora, Nancy readily accepts the assignment. Exhibiting total fearlessness and constant level headedness, Nancy uses her deductive reasoning to try and outsmart the ghost. Along the way, Nancy's lawyer father is kidnapped in what at first appears to be an unrelated incident, or is it? Stage and screen actress, Laura Linney, aptly captures the essence of Nancy and all of the other characters. A subtle Hitchcockian soundtrack underscores the suspenseful moments without overpowering the story. A surefire winner.-Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL
