"Ladd is at the top of her game and should be an auto-buy for every reader." —RT Book Reviews, 4 ½ stars, TOP PICK! review of The Curiosity Keeper

The Curiosity Keeper

Camille Iverness can take care of herself. She's done so since the day her mother abandoned the family and left Camille to run their shabby curiosity shop. But when a violent betrayal leaves her injured with no place to hide, Camille must allow a mysterious stranger to come to her aid.

Dawn at Emberwilde

For as long as she can remember, beautiful and free-spirited Isabel has strained against the rules and rigidity of the Fellsworth School in the rolling English countryside. No longer a student, Isabel set her sights on a steady role as a teacher at the school. The unexpected arrival of a stranger with news of unknown relatives turns Isabel's small, predictable world upside down, sweeping her and her younger sister into a labyrinth of intrigue and hidden motives.

A Stranger at Fellsworth

Annabelle Thorley has it all—beauty, wealth, and wit, but when her guardian brother loses their fortune, he insists that she marry his colleague to help restore his business—a colleague she knows is involved in illegal activities. Annabelle sees only one way out of the dangerous situation: she escapes from her home in London to the safety of her estranged uncle's home at the Fellsworth School.

In 1812, Camille Iverness works in her father's curiosity shop, selling collectibles, in a rough part of London. She had a more genteel upbringing living on her grandfather's estate, until his death brought about a move to London and into commercial enterprise. Jonathan Gilchrist is drawn to the Iverness Curiosity Shop in search of a valuable ruby stolen from his father, the possession of which can save the Gilchrist family fortune and their estate. Jonathan naturally assumes Camille knows something about the ruby; after someone else appears at the shop seeking it, the subsequent trouble forces Camille to accept help from Jonathan, although she does not trust him. Attraction grows between them even while the gem threatens their developing relationship. Ladd's (The Headmistress of Rosemere) story, with its menace and cast of seedy London characters, feels more like a work of Dickens than a Regency, which may confound Regency fans. A twist near the end provides an element of surprise in a relatively predictable plot. A solid outing. Agent: Tamela Hancock Murray, Steve Laube Agency.

Operating a rundown curiosity shop with her cantankerous father, Camille Invernesse leads a routine life until she escapes a robbery at the store and encounters apothecary Jonathan Gilchrist, who brings her home to care for her injured arm. She meets his father, a collector of curiosities, and learns that Ian Gilchrist believes that her father stole a valuable ruby known as the Bevoy. It's up to Camille and Jonathan to figure out the truth as their attraction to each other blossoms. VERDICT Ladd, who won the 2011 Genesis Award for historical romance (A Lady at Willowgrove Hall) has written an engaging Regency with a richly detailed setting and an unpredictable suspenseful plot. Admirers of Sandra Orchard and Lis Wiehl who want to try a romance with a historical bent may enjoy this new series.
