      At age 58 John Steinbeck and his venerable standard poodle, Charley, set out on a journey across America in a camper. For three months these companions traveled the nation, meeting friends, strangers, relatives and immersing themselves in the fabric of the country as it was at that time. Gary Sinise does a grand job giving life to Steinbeck's words. While his regional accents don't always hit the mark, the listener is happy to forgive because of the love and respect Sinise accords the Steinbeck story.       Of all the narrators who have tried to grasp the wayward wit and glorious vision of Nobel laureate Steinbeck, Ron McLarty is the best. In his reading of Steinbeck's road-trip memoir "in search of America," McLarty captures the tone of the author, as well as the voices and accents of the people he and his blue poodle meet along the way. From taciturn Mainers and French-Canadian farmers to crass New Yorkers, Texas ranchers and caballeros, McLarty captures them all with the appropriate regional accent. It's worth noting that this recording lends itself especially well to listening on the road: Steinbeck's observations about America and the nature of travel make for enlightening roadway philosophy.
